Water FAQ
Rainwater Harvesting
- Should I install an above ground tank or a below ground tank?
-
Deciding on the best type of tank to install can depend on many factors - including the accessibility of your site, soil type (eg digging through rock for an underground tank may be uneconomical), budget and available space. Storm Sustainability can advise on the most appropriate solution for your site.
- What size tank do I need?
-
Selecting the optimum size tank to install largely depends on what you intend on using the collected water for. As a rule of thumb, however, we would recommend that you invest in the largest tank you can either fit or afford as the more water you can store the better off you will be in the long term. Be aware that a significant proportion of the cost of a tank in often in delivery and installation, so it makes logical sense to install the largest tank you can.
- How can I work out how much rainwater my roof can collect?
-
Measure the length and width of your roof in metres and mulitply the two figures to calculate your roof area (eg 10 metres x 15 metres = 150 square metres). One millimetre of rain on one square metre of roof equals one litre of water. So for instance, if you have a roof of 150 square metres and you get a rain downfall of 2mm, then 150 x 2 = 300 litres of water will be collected.
- Can I recycle water from my house to use in the garden?
-
Yes. Grey Water from showers, bathroom and laundry sinks, and washing machines can be re-used in your garden. It is always wise to use environmentally friendly detergetns which are low in chemicals and less likely to cause harm to your plants. Please note that Black Water from kitchen sinks, dishwashers and toilets is not safe to use untreated on your garden.
- Can I claim a rebate for my water tank?
-
Many local, state and federal government grant schemes are now available to encourage water saving initiatives including tank installations. Contact your local government or council for more information.
